Thousands of people are heading to Manchester to attend a tribute concert remembering the lives lost in the terrorist attack on May 22, with security set to be stepped up following Saturday night’s terror attack in London.
50,000 tickets for the tribute concert were sold out within 20 minutes, with the money going to a special fund for families of the victims. More than 14,000 free tickets were allotted to the May 22 concert goers.
The mega-gig on Sunday evening will feature performances by Ariana Grande plus Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Pharrell Williams, Take That, Niall Horan, Little Mix, Robbie Williams and Black Eyed Peas.
In the wake of Saturday night’s terror attacks in London, security at the event is expected to be stepped up. On Sunday morning local time the event organizers posted on Twitter “Today security will be at its highest. Armed police will be around. Please don't feel scared to come today. You don't want to live in fear!”
Greater Manchester Police had earlier confirmed that armed police would be at the gates of the venue and in the busiest areas during the concert. Concert goers have been told in advance not to bring bags into the venue.
Pop star Ariana Grande said she wanted to return to the "incredibly brave city" of Manchester to spend time with her fans, and also "honor and raise money for the victims and their families". In the wake of Saturday night's London attack, she tweeted that she was “praying for London.”
