The phone conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump on Monday was “a good thing” for the two countries and the whole world, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Geng Shuang said at a regular press conference on Monday.
Geng told reporters that the phone call showed close communication between the two influential leaders, and that it is good for them to exchange views on issues of mutual concern. “There is no need to be surprised that the two leaders are maintaining such close contact,” he said.
The call came amid rising tension on the Korean Peninsula. Xi stressed China is against any action that would violate UN Security Council resolutions. He expressed hope that all parties can exercise "restraint" on the DPRK issue, and not take "provocative actions," according to Geng.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang urged all sides to exercise restraint and avoid taking actions that could escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
This was the second phone call between Xi and Trump this month. On April 12, they talked about the Korean Peninsula situation and matters related to Syria.
