French prosecutors officially started on Wednesday a judicial investigation into the death of Liu Shaoyo, a Chinese man shot dead by police at his Paris home last week, AFP news agency reported.
The examining magistrate will probe whether there is a case for “violence resulting in an unintentional death" by a member of the police force, AFP said, quoting a court source.
Liu, a 56-year-old father of five residing in Paris, was shot dead by a police officer on March 26 at his home. The police said he attacked one of the officers, while Liu's family insists that was not the case.
China has urged France to find out the truth and reveal the results of the investigation as soon as possible, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a press conference on Thursday.
She added that the ministry was keeping in close contact with French authorities and hoped they could effectively protect the safety and lawful rights and interests of Chinese citizens and institutions in France.
