Five inmates died in a prison riot Tuesday in the central-western Brazilian state of Mato Grosso and another 17 were wounded, the state's Security Department said.
Two guns were found inside the lockup at the Dr. Osvaldo Florentino Leite Ferreira prison, according to the AP news agency. The unrest apparently began as a fight between rival gangs, it reported.
Brazil has seen a spate of prison riots this year that has left dozens of prisoners dead.
On April 7, six inmates were confirmed dead at the Puraquequara Prison on the outskirts of Manaus in northern Brazil, according to authorities.
At least 60 people were also killed in a prison riot that lasted 17 hours in the northern city of Manaus in January.
