China opposed Friday's missile launch by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) which was in violation of UN Security Council resolutions, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Saturday.
Geng made the remarks after Pyongyang on Saturday confirmed that it successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Friday night.

The spokesman said China urged the DPRK to comply with UN resolutions and stop any action that might escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
He added that China hopes all the relevant parties act with caution after the latest missile test and jointly safeguard peace and stability in the region.

Geng has also urged Seoul and Washington to stop the deployment process of the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system.

His remarks came after the ROK's President Moon Jae-in on Saturday ordered his aides to consult with US counterparts about the deployment of four more mobile THAAD launchers.
Geng reiterated that China's position on the issue is consistent and clear, saying the deployment seriously undermines regional strategic balance and the strategic security interests of regional countries including China.
