The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Saturday confirmed that it has successfully tested a second "Hwasong 14" intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Friday night, saying the rocket was meant as a "stern warning" for the US, according to its state news agency Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The ICBM was launched at 11:41 p.m. (1441 GMT) from DPRK's northern Jangang Province, an official at South Korea's Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

It flew 998km within 47 minutes and 12 seconds and reached its target water, with a maximum altitude of 3,734.9 km, KCNA said.

Japanese broadcaster NHK said the missile landed in the waters of Japan's exclusive economic zone, citing a military official.

The test was ordered by the DPRK leader Kim Jong Un, who said the successful missile test showed all of the US was within striking distance.
