The Venezuelan Supreme Court issued a written statement Tuesday accusing the opposition-dominated Congress of undermining national stability.
In a statement, the court said Congress was threatening the country's constitutional order, democracy and political stability. The statement strongly condemned the proposal in Congress to remove the court's seven justices. The statement also urged lawmakers to act within the framework of the Constitution to ensure the country's democratic order and rule of law.
Supporters of the opposition protested in the capital Caracas on Tuesday against the “constitutional interruption” by the court. Protesters also demanded the removal of the justices.

Demonstrators clashed with military police. Several assembly members were injured in the scuffles, opposition parties said.
Congress is expected to hold a special meeting Wednesday to vote on a proposal to replace the country’s Supreme Court judges.
The Venezuelan Ministry of Interior, Justice and Peace on Tuesday said the opposition was guilty of inciting violence.

The Supreme Court on March 30 ruled that Congress had formed an “unlawful state” in “contempt” of court. The court also ruled that it would take over Congress’ legislative functions until its legitimacy is restored. In addition, the court stripped assembly members of their parliamentary immunity.
Even Luisa Ortega, the country's attorney-general and a longtime government ally, stated that the Supreme Court's conduct was "unconstitutional."
The court reversed its own decision on April 1 after a late-night state security council meeting organized by President Nicolas Maduro to resolve the controversy between the tribunal and the General Prosecutor’s office.
