US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis arrived in Afghanistan on Monday, making his first visit to the country as defense chief, AFP reported citing a US defense official.
The visit was conducted without a previous announcement to the public. Mattis is expected to meet Afghan officials and US troops in Kabul.
Mattis’ visit was confirmed hours after his Afghan counterpart, Abdullah Habibi and the country’s Army Chief of Staff, Qadam Shah Shahim, resigned over a deadly attack on a military base that killed at least 140 soldiers last week.
