The Chinese Mainland and Taiwan attach great importance to cracking down on telecommunication fraud, and fruitful results have been made thanks to the joint efforts. Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday, in response to a question regarding the mainland’s stance on Cross-Strait joint efforts in operating an illicit money returning mechanism.
He said, as of now, a total of 6.8 million yuan (about 990,000 US dollars) has been recovered from 11 fraudulent cases and has been returned to the victims.
According to Ma, the Cross-Strait Joint Crime-Fighting and Judicial Mutual Assistance Agreement has been protecting the interests of people from both the Chinese Mainland and Taiwan since it was put into effect.
China has been cooperating with other countries and regions to crack down on telecommunication fraud. Last year, Chinese police dispatched teams to Kenya, Laos, Malaysia, Cambodia and Spain, bringing back 561 suspects.
