Backlash and bickering in Washington continue after the US president abruptly fired the country's top law enforcement official. James Comey is now the second FBI director ever to be fired. And the Bureau is investigating alleged links between the Trump campaign and Russia.
On Wednesday, protesters gathered outside the White House demanding an independent investigation into allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election. Just a day earlier, President Donald Trump fired Comey, the man leading an investigation into those allegations.
Tuesday's firing came just days after Comey reportedly asked for more resources to investigate the allegations of Russian meddling in the US election and just ahead of Trump's meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the White House.
The White House says the president made the decision on Tuesday, but had reservations about Comey's leadership since taking office in January. That was a drastic reversal from just two weeks ago, when Trump expressed confidence in Comey.
The Trump White House continues to distance itself from any appearance that Comey was fired for wanting to expand the Russia probe. Comey, now as a private citizen, has been invited to testify in front of Congress next week.
