The solution to the conflict in Syria is not military action but more dialogue, China's permanent representative to the UN told an emergency meeting of the organization’s Security Council on Friday following the US air strikes on a Syrian military base.
Liu Jieyi said that China always stands for dialogue in resolving international conflicts and all parties must ensure that the situation does not further deteriorate. “Military means will not work,” he said.
The meeting was called in the wake of air strikes launched by the US as a response to the Syrian government’s alleged use of chemical weapons against civilians earlier this week.
Liu called on all parties to persist in diplomatic efforts, seek political solutions and support the United Nations as the main mediation channel.
