Fighting between Philippine government forces and Islamist militants in the southern city of Marawi has entered a fourth week.

The military reports they are holding out against more than 200 fighters.

Civilians have been used as human shields and mosques as safe havens.

Authorities say 59 soldiers and 26 civilians have been killed since clashes erupted. But residents say they have seen at least 100 bodies in the conflict zone.

The battle for Marawi began on May 23, when the Philippine military tried to capture Isnilon Hapilon, the head of a southern militia that pledged loyalty to ISIL.
