China and Germany have made progress in several areas after years of people-to-people exchanges, said Michael Clauss, the German Ambassador to China.

Economic ties have been developing well, with bilateral trade hitting almost 280 billion US dollars and is set to grow, said Clauss.

Chinese president Xi Jinping is in Germany for a state visit and the G20 summit, and Clauss expects the trip to be more than just a political event as he and German Chancellor Angela Merkel will jointly open a garden in the Berlin Zoo.

2017 marks the 45th year of diplomatic ties between China and Germany.
