South Korea’s National Assembly adopted a resolution on Thursday urging China to stop what it claimed to be economic retaliation over the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) in South Korea, according to a report by Yonhap news agency.
The resolution, with approval from 188 of the 189 lawmakers in attendance, expresses concern over the current situation of the country's businesses in China and calls for Seoul’s proactive action to resolve the bilateral dispute.
Lotte Group, which owns over 100 markets and five department stores in China, has been under fire as a result of the conglomerate’s role in South Korea’s deployment of the THAAD system.‍ The tourism industry in the country has also been hit hard as a total of 182 cruises were cancelled due to tensions between the two countries.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a routine press conference in February that China welcomes foreign companies’ investment, but it is up to the market and consumers whether they are successful.
“The relative parties know well of the Chinese people’s stance in the deployment of THAAD, and I believe they have noticed their voices,” Geng said.
