The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday in response to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) latest ballistic missile test.

The meeting was requested by the United States, Japan and South Korea. According to South Korean and US military officials, the missile was launched on May 21 and traveled around 500 kilometers before landing in the Sea of Japan. It follows a test launch on May 14 of what was believed to be an intermediate-range Hwasong-12 missile. Pyongyang had boasted that the launch was successful and the projectile is capable of carrying a heavy nuclear warhead.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Sunday described the DPRK's latest missile test as "disappointing" and "disturbing", while South Korea's Foreign Ministry said the launch was "reckless and irresponsible".
