A Hong Kong court on Monday granted bail to former Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, who was earlier convicted and jailed for 20 months over a misconduct charge.
The 72 year old was transferred to the court on Monday afternoon from Queen Mary Hospital where he was kept in a custodial ward due to breathing problems. Tsang's wife Selina Tsang Pou Siu-mei said his health has been fluctuating lately.
Tsang was sentenced to 20 months in jail in February for misconduct when he was the leader of Hong Kong SAR between 2010 and 2012. He is still facing a corruption trial over a penthouse in Shenzhen.
He is applying to the Court of Appeal for a temporary release pending an appeal against the conviction and sentence. A re-trial has been scheduled for September 26, with another pretrial proceeding set for May 12 as jurors failed to return a majority verdict for charge of bribery.
Tsang was released on bail for 100,000 Hong Kong dollars (12,858 US dollars) in cash while waiting for the trial.
