US Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday said that DPRK’s “provocation” is a reminder of the risks that US and South Korean troops face every day “in the defense of the freedom of the people of South Korea and the defense of America in this part of the world.”‍
He made this remark at a fellowship dinner at US Army Garrison Yongsan in Seoul after arriving in South Korea.
Pence landed at the US Osan Air Base on Sunday to begin his three-day visit to South Korea amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
Pence is the highest-ranking official of the Trump administration to visit South Korea. He is scheduled to meet South Korea’s Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn on Monday to exchange views with Seoul on strategies to counter the DPRK’s missile and nuclear program.
He will also meet South Korean Prime Mnister Hwang Kyo-ahn and National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun.‍
Pence’s trip comes after the DPRK failed in a missile test from its east coast. He will depart for Japan on Tuesday and visit Indonesia and Australia in the coming days.
