China urges the U.S. and the UK to stop setting up double standards when dealing with radical protests, reiterating the most important task for Hong Kong is to end violence and restore order, said Geng Shuang, spokesperson for Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday at a press conference.

A man was set on fire by rioters when expressing his opposition against radical protests on Monday. Geng said that the U.S. and the UK governments turned a blind eye to the "horrible action" while condemning the Hong Kong police for "unjustified use of deadly force" and saying the escalation was "deeply disturbing."

Geng refuted the allegation, saying the selective bias in Hong Kong issue once again exposed their "hypocrisy, double standards and ulterior motives," adding that the U.S. and UK police should think about what would they do if the same thing happened in their countries.

"Ending violence and restoring order remains Hong Kong's most important task and broadly reached consensus," the spokesperson reiterated, stressing Central Government's support to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government in exercising its power under the Basic Law.

Regarding the incident of the police opening fire on one protester on Monday, Geng cited the police saying the man was injured after trying to grab the police officer's gun. He added that the police action was in accordance with the law as it was made to "protect personal and other residents' safety."

Geng restated that Hong Kong affairs are China's internal affairs, allowing no interference from any organizations or individuals. He urged the U.S. and the UK governments to respect China's sovereignty and stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs in any form.
