On a global scale, the Hulun Lake and Hulun Buir Grasslands play an important role in maintaining the ecology of northern China and even the northern hemisphere as a whole.

But in the 21st century, as the climate warms, the amount of incoming water is reducing, resulting in Hulun Lake shrinking, which has drawn attention both inside and outside China.
