Chris Tang: HK police to fully support National Security Committee

China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) has established the Committee for Safeguarding National Security of the HKSAR, which is chaired by Chief Executive Carrie Lam.  

The Hong Kong Police Force is an important unit in executing the national security law. CGTN conducted an exclusive interview with Commissioner of Police Chris Tang, who is also a member of the committee. 

Tang said he will make every effort to assist the chief executive in safeguarding national security and carrying out its key duties, namely analyzing and assessing situations, advancing the development of the legal system and enforcement mechanisms and coordinating major work and significant operations.  

Tang said he will provide full support for the committee and work closely with other law enforcement authorities to bring all offenders who breach the national security law to justice.

The National Security Department of the Hong Kong Police Force was set up on 1 July in accordance with the national security law. 

Duties and functions of the department are:  

(1) Collecting and analyzing intelligence and information concerning national security; 

(2) Planning, coordinating and enforcing measures and operations for safeguarding national security; 

(3) Investigating offences endangering national security; 

(4) Conducting counter-interference investigation and national security review; 

(5) Carrying out tasks of safeguarding national security assigned by the Committee for Safeguarding National Security of the HKSAR.  

Lam has also appointed Edwina Lau as Deputy Commissioner of Police (National Security) to head the department for safeguarding national security of the Hong Kong Police Force. CGTN will have an exclusive interview with Lau.
