Some Chinese students enrolled in New York University (NYU) will start their schooling in Shanghai in this fall semester due to coronavirus.

NYU Shanghai announced on its website Friday that it will welcome some 2,300 Chinese undergraduates and 800 Chinese graduate students from NYU and NYU Abu Dhabi, together with 1,700 NYU Shanghai students, this fall.

The move is part of the NYU Global Network's "Go Local" plan in response to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and U.S. government's much-boycotted new student visa policy. The plan allows students apply to study at a NYU campus that is open and near their homes.

"In these uncertain times, NYU Shanghai is proud to be able to offer students from our sister campuses in New York and Abu Dhabi this opportunity to attend live classes in Shanghai," said Tong Shijun, chancellor of NYU Shanghai.

Since the epidemic has been basically controlled in Shanghai, the majority of the classes will be given physically on the NYU Shanghai campus and temporary rental places adjacent to the main academic building.

"Go Local" students will be allowed to take online classes offered by their home campuses, and online or "mixed mode" classes may also be offered for students who are unable to come to the Shanghai campus.

NYU Shanghai said that about 75 faculties from NYU and other universities will join in to teach nearly 200 courses for undergraduates and 40 courses for graduate students at the temporary campus.

NYU Shanghai, established in 2012, is China's first Sino-U.S. research university and the third degree-granting campus of the NYU Global Network. It currently has about 1,700 undergraduates, 49 percent of whom are international students, and 210 graduate students.
