U.S. President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden are set to participate in the first presidential debate of this election year and China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region celebrates its 65th founding anniversary.

Eyes on first Trump-Biden debate

President Donald Trump and Democratic rival Joe Biden will spar for 90 minutes over the coronavirus, voting integrity and "race and violence in our cities," according to the organizers of Tuesday's first head-to-head election debate.

Trump and Biden will address each of those topics, as well as discuss the economy and their track records in six segments scheduled to last 15 minutes apiece, the Commission on Presidential Debates said in a statement.

Topics were selected by the debate's moderator, Fox News anchor Chris Wallace while early voting is under way in several states ahead of the November 3 election.

Trump and Biden will have a limited audience in person due to the pandemic but are expected to draw millions of viewers to watch the commercial-free debate on television. Two more debates between the two politicians are scheduled on October 15 and 22.

65th anniversary of China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region

Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, located in northwest China, will celebrate its 65th founding anniversary on Thursday. A system of ethnic regional autonomy was established in Xinjiang when it was founded on October 1, 1955.

For a range of historical and natural reasons, it has long lagged behind other parts of the country in development, hence its large impoverished population.

Thanks to strenuous efforts from all sides, major progress has been achieved in the work related to Xinjiang, improving key indicators from 2014 to 2019. Such improvements include a sound economic momentum with an average annual GDP growth rate of 7.2 percent, people's living standards growing to an average of 9.1 percent annual growth in residential per capita disposable income, and more than 2.92 million out of 3.09 million people being lifted out of poverty.
