A Chinese envoy to the UN Office in Geneva on Friday urged related parties to stop interfering in China's internal affairs related to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), after a draft decision to improve HKSAR's electoral system was submitted to China's top legislative body for deliberation.

Chen Xu, China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Geneva Office, said that certain western countries, in the name of human rights, have pressured China over Hong Kong affairs. Their plot to interfere in China's internal affairs is doomed to fail, he said in a video briefing.

He added that the supporting remarks made by the representative from the Republic of Belarus on behalf of 70 countries for China's stance and measures on Hong Kong affairs prove that China has won broad support.

He stressed that non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign countries is an important principle of the UN Charter and the basic norms governing international relations.

The situation in Hong Kong in recent years has proved that the SAR's electoral system needs to advance with the times and provide a guarantee for the implementation of the principles "One Country, Two Systems" and "patriots governing Hong Kong", Chen said.
