The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government strives to complete amending local laws related to the electoral system as soon as possible, an official said on Friday.
Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang made the remarks at a meeting of the Legislative Council (LegCo) subcommittee on improving the electoral system of the HKSAR.
The National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, adopted a decision on improving the electoral system of the HKSAR at the fourth session of the 13th NPC on March 11.
The NPC Standing Committee will review the draft amendments to Annex I and Annex II to the HKSAR Basic Law during its 27th session scheduled on March 29-30. The two annexes govern respectively the selection method of the HKSAR chief executive and the formation method of and the voting procedures in the LegCo.

Broad support for NPC decision to improve HK electoral system
Tsang said the HKSAR government has started to sort out related local electoral laws which need to be amended.
After the NPC Standing Committee completes the amendment of the two annexes, the HKSAR government will finish revising related local electoral laws according to the amended annexes and submit the draft bills to the LegCo as soon as possible, Tsang said, adding that efforts will also be made to introduce the draft bills to the general public.
After the HKSAR government submitted the draft bills to the LegCo, the subcommittee under the LegCo House Committee can be transformed into a bill committee and push forward a speedy review of the draft bills.

According to the NPC decision, improving the electoral system of the HKSAR must "fully and faithfully implement the policy of 'One Country, Two Systems'" and ensure the administration of Hong Kong by Hong Kong people "with patriots as the main body."
It is another major step taken by the state to improve the HKSAR's legal and political systems since the Law on Safeguarding National Security in the HKSAR was adopted in June 2020.
More than 2.38 million signatures were collected in Hong Kong in support of the move during an 11-day campaign earlier this month. The petition was presented to the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR on Wednesday.
