Chinese, Pakistani FMs agree on closer coordination over Afghanistan

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi stressed the importance of close coordination between the two countries on how to cope with the Afghanistan situation during a phone conversation on Wednesday.  

The Taliban have taken over Afghanistan after its fighters entered the capital city of Kabul following President Ashraf Ghani's fleeing from the country and the collapse of his government.   

As important neighbors of Afghanistan and responsible countries in the region, China and Pakistan need to strengthen communication and coordination under the current circumstances and play a constructive role in supporting Afghanistan's stable transition and maintaining regional peace and stability, said Wang.

Wang said both countries should encourage all Afghan parties to strengthen solidarity, and to establish a new broad-based and inclusive political structure that is suited to the Afghan national conditions, and supported by the Afghan people. 

Noting the Chinese and Pakistani embassies in Afghanistan are still operating normally, he said the two countries should contact and communicate with the Afghan Taliban to ensure the safety of Chinese and Pakistani personnel and institutions there. 

Wang added both China and Pakistan should support Afghanistan in its resolute fight against terrorism, and help promote international cooperation involving Afghanistan in an orderly manner.  

Qureshi said he appreciated the important and positive role China has played on the Afghan issue, adding the two sides should strengthen coordination and cooperation. 

The Afghan Taliban's takeover of Kabul has not caused any bloodshed or casualties, the domestic situation in Afghanistan is moving toward stability and the people's life has gradually returned to normal, said the Pakistani foreign minister, who also urged all the parties to support the Taliban to implement its commitment and protect the rights and interests of the Afghan people. 

During the phone call, Wang also congratulated Pakistan on its 75th Independence Day, and expressed the Chinese side's appreciation of the important progress made by Pakistan in the investigation of the Dasu terrorist attack that had caused Chinese casualties.
