China's Special Envoy for Climate Change Xie Zhenhua on Tuesday underlined the significance of putting the Paris Agreement into practice, saying it is important to translate the political will of countries into action.

Xie's remark came while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 26th United Nations Conference of Parties (COP26) on Climate Change held in Glasgow.

The Paris Agreement is a milestone of global climate change governance, stipulating the global goals and principles of tackling climate change, Xie said.

Climate change mitigation and climate change adaptation are equally important, Xie said, adding that funds for adaptation are still insufficient.

Twelve years ago, rich nations made a significant pledge to channel $100 billion a year to less wealthy nations, but the pledge hasn't been fulfilled, he added.

The Chinese envoy elaborated China's significant contribution in the field of energy conservation, as well as renewable energy resources development, and noted that China's contribution accounts for 30-50 percent of the global contribution in this regard.

China took the lead in releasing its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which outlined the country's plans to see its carbon emissions peak by 2030. China's NDC is upgraded and powerful, Xie said.

He called for actions rather than words to meet the goals set by the Paris Agreement and pointed out that to realize net zero by 2050, developed countries should take the lead in emission reduction and provide assistance to developing countries.

The efforts developed countries have put forward are still not enough, Xie said.

Xie believes that an agreement on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement can be reached at the summit. He also pointed out that a technical problem is the next focus as countries have reached political consensus on this issue.

China supports the Paris Agreement, Xie said. The consensus itself will also prove the effectiveness of multilateral mechanism.
