July is the best season for blue-tailed bee-eater chicks when food is abundant. However, parents won't fly in deliveries everyday as these birdies need to learn how to fly and get their own food. Test flight is the most crucial step for the fledglings – the pain they must bear if they are to grow.

About 'Journeys in Nature': Blue-tailed Bee-eater Series

The blue-tailed bee-eater is a colorful and slender bird. The predominantly green bird is usually found near water. China is home to seven bee-eater species. The blue-tailed bee-eater got its Chinese name "li hou feng hu" for its maroon throat feathers. Its iridescent plumage means it's often dubbed the "most beautiful bird."
