The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) fired two short-range ballistic missiles eastward, Yonhap reported Thursday, citing the Republic of Korea's (ROK) Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

The missile launch was the sixth in 12 days and the first since the DPRK fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) over Japan on Tuesday, which prompted joint ROK and U.S. missile drills.

It also came after the ROK and the U.S. fired four surface-to-surface missiles at mock targets in the sea the previous day.

The JCS said it detected the launches from the Samsok area in Pyongyang between 6:01 a.m. and 6:23 a.m. without providing other details.

"While strengthening our monitoring and vigilance, our military is maintaining a full readiness posture in close cooperation with the United States," the JCS said in a text message sent to reporters.

The United Nations Security Council met on Wednesday to discuss Pyongyang's Tuesday launch and the DPRK condemned Washington for repositioning a U.S. aircraft carrier off the Korean Peninsula, saying it posed a serious threat to the stability of the situation.

Pyongyang's foreign ministry said that the recent launches were "just counteraction measures of the Korean People's Army on South Korea-U.S. joint drills."
