Caohai Lake, a small mountain lake in southwest China's Guizhou Province, becomes an ideal winter home for black-necked cranes with its equable climate and abundant food. These cranes are most active at dawn. Having refreshed from the arduous voyage to the wintering land, they expect four months of time free from the burden of procreation. Besides them, common cranes, bar-headed geese and egrets have all staked their claims. When the morning comes, the crane flocks take off toward the rising sun leading by a head black-necked crane.
