A forest ranger, Xiong Youfu has spent a long time chasing gibbons in southwest China's Yunnan Province. Xiong's son, who is in elementary school, is intrigued by the gibbons. The boy always wants to go into the mountains to meet the patriarch in black. The boy's interest in gibbons makes Xiong somehow relieved, and creates a unique bond between father and son.

The western black-crested gibbon, which lives in southwest China's Yunnan Province, Laos and Vietnam, is a critically endangered species in the country.
