Xiangxi, situated in western Hunan of central China, has large populations of Tujia and Miao people. With rich ethnic customs, Xiangxi has a unique and splendid culture of its own. Laosicheng relics that date back to Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) add to a comprehensive urban landscape, while Xiangxi Global Geopark is home to 160 historic sites of the Stone Age and the Ancient Town of Fenghuang displays fascinating diversity with no less than 28 ethnic groups among its residents. Rich intangible heritage items also shine and attract tourists and researchers, such as the Tujia hand-waving dance, the Xiangxi batik textile-dyeing technique, Miao embroidery and Fenghuang paper decoration.
