China says PLA drills around island of Taiwan a strong punishment for separatist acts

CGTN

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that the drills conducted by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) surrounding the island of Taiwan serve as a strong punishment for the separatist acts of "Taiwan independence" forces and a stern warning against the interference and provocation by external forces.

The ministry's spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, who made the remarks at a regular briefing in response to the drills, called them "necessary and legitimate," consistent with international customary practices and laws.

Wang stressed that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, which is both a historical fact and the real status quo that will never change, and that "Taiwan independence" is a dead end.

The spokesperson urged the United States to stop encouraging and supporting "Taiwan independence" forces and stop interfering in China's internal affairs.

Any act that jeopardizes China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity will be met with a resolute response from the Chinese side, he warned.

PLA's Eastern Theater Command started joint military drills on Thursday morning in the Taiwan Straits, the north, south and east of the island of Taiwan, as well as areas around the islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu and Dongyin, according to the theater command.

The drills, code-named Joint Sword-2024A, and seeing participation from various military services, including the army, navy, air force and rocket force of the theater command, are being conducted from Thursday to Friday.
