A spokesperson from China's Ministry of Commerce said the country's anti-dumping measures against imported brandy from the European Union are legitimate trade remedies initiated by the Chinese industry and are fully compliant with WTO regulations.
China imposed temporary anti-dumping measures on EU brandy on Tuesday, just days after the EU voted to impose tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs).
The ministry asserted that the EU's anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese EVs was not prompted by industry requests and lacks a solid factual and legal foundation. They argued that the EU measures are a clear violation of WTO rules, using trade remedies as a guise for protectionism.
"To firmly defend the legitimate development rights of China's EV industry, China has lodged a strong protest with the WTO and is bringing the relevant anti-subsidy measures before the WTO dispute settlement mechanism," the spokesperson said.
The ministry urges the EU to immediately rectify its practices to protect the broader economic and trade interests between China and the EU.
