Chinese President Xi Jinping has borrowed words from a local folk song to extend his greetings to global shakers and movers in the realm of politics and business, telling international leaders at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Boao Forum for Asia, "long time no see."
"Long Time No See" is a song sung in Hainanese dialect, inspired by the folk songs of the Li ethnic group, a community of 1.2 million people who have called Hainan, the permanent host of the Boao Forum for Asia annual conference, home since ancient times.
The song, composed by Xie Wenjing, tells the story of two lovers, who have been separated for far too long. They communicate their feelings to each other and speak of the longing inside them.

President Xi’s use of the lyrics to address the audience reflected his amicable ties with global decision makers, as well as China’s desire to connect with the rest of the world.
“It's been a long time since we've seen each other, and although we are with each other right now, I know that I can’t wait to see you again,” the president said, echoing the song widely known on the island.
In his keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the event, Xi reiterated China’s stance on globalization and connectivity, in a world where protectionism and isolationism are rising.
