President Xi Jinping of China has urged leading members of civil society to make a greater contribution to the country's economic development.
President Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the call in Beijing on Tuesday when he presided over a symposium convened by the committee to solicit opinions and suggestions on the economy from the "non-CPC elite."
He made such remarks to members of non-communist parties, the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and representatives of personages without party affiliation, encouraging them to reach consensuses and take on due responsibilities for the advancement of the Chinese economy.
The Chinese president expressed his expectation for non-CPC personages to present more suggestions and proposals to the CPC Central Committee and help both the CPC and the government further national reform and opening up.
He also thanked them for their help in uniting the nation during the reform process over the past four decades as well as their efforts over the past year in such areas as poverty alleviation and high-quality development of China's private sector.
The meeting was also attended by Li Keqiang, Wang Huning and Han Zheng, all members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
Li briefed China's economic work this year and the CPC Central Committee's blueprint for the economic work next year.
Representatives from non-CPC representatives made suggestions on various fields, including technology and innovation, financing for infrastructure facilities, the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the improvement of the business environment, and the protection of the ecosystem of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Regarding the economic work for next year, Xi emphasized the importance of upholding the Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as the main guidance. The supply-side structural reform will be the key, he noted, adding that more measures of reform and opening up and ways that are market-oriented and those based on the rule of law will be implemented.
President Xi also said the Chinese people's well-being needs to be continuously improved while the country's economy is managed to stay healthy and the society stable.
A proactive fiscal policy and prudent monetary policy will be maintained next year, according to President Xi.
