The spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry has urged all parties involved in the Korean Peninsula situation to “keep moving in a positive direction to find a breakthrough in resuming peace talks” after Donald Trump’s comment on Monday that he "would be honored" to meet DPRK leader Kim Jong Un.
Spokesman Geng Shuang made the comments at a regular press briefing on Tuesday.
Asked whether the Chinese government would help arrange a meeting between Trump and Kim, Geng did not answer directly but said, “The US and the DPRK, as direct stakeholders, should make a political decision, take action and show their sincerity as soon as possible.”
He also reiterated China's firm stance in peacefully denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. Negotiation and dialogue are the only way to safeguard peace in the region, Geng said.
US President Trump spoke about his openness to a meeting with Kim in an interview with Bloomberg, adding the caveat that it would have to be “under the right circumstances.”
No sitting US president has ever met with the leader of the DPRK while in power, according to CNN.
