The Chinese central government will continue to act as a strong supporter of Hong Kong, Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a speech after arriving in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Thursday, two days ahead of the 20th anniversary of the territory's return to China.
"We came here to show support," Xi said, while outlining "three main purposes" of the visit: extending best wishes, showing support and planning the future.

"Over the past 20 years, the central government has always been a strong supporter of Hong Kong," he added. "We will continue to support Hong Kong in growing its economy and improving people's livelihood."
Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan were greeted by a group of high-ranking officials at the airport, including Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying and Chief Executive-elect Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor. The Chinese president will attend the inauguration of Lam and her cabinet on Saturday.
'Hong Kong has always been in my heart'
This is Xi's first trip to Hong Kong as Chinese president. In July 2008, he visited the SAR as China's vice president.
"I'm very glad to come to Hong Kong again after nine years," he said, "Hong Kong has always been in my heart."
The 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China is an important occasion to celebrate in both the SAR and across the nation, Xi said, extending his congratulations to Hong Kong for its achievements during the past two decades.

Xi will attend a series of celebration events and inspect the SAR during his three-day visit.
"We would like to review Hong Kong's remarkable 20 years with its various social sectors to summarize experience and look into the future, in an effort to ensure the long-term success of the 'One Country, Two Systems' policy," the Chinese president stressed.
