Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi briefed the media Sunday on China's foreign policies and diplomatic relations at a press conference on the sidelines of the fourth session of the 13th National People's Congress in Beijing.

In his opening remarks, Wang Yi said China will continue working with other countries to completely defeat the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The global fight against COVID-19 must not stop until the virus is eliminated in each and every country. Everyone is obligated to help those in need even when there is only one case of infection left," he said.

At the almost two-hour press conference, Wang took a total of 27 questions, covering a wide variety of topics.

The most frequently addressed words at this year's press conference are "cooperation," "development" and "COVID-19," according to CGTN's analysis on word frequency.

As the world heads into the second year of the coronavirus pandemic, "vaccine" also tops the list.

"China is a firm believer in making COVID-19 vaccines a public good, a committed frontrunner in promoting international vaccine cooperation, and a steadfast advocate for equitable vaccine distribution," Wang said.

The press conference also covered China's diplomatic endeavors over the past year, China's relations with major world powers, issues related to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Xinjiang, and China's role in global affairs, as well as the Belt and Road cooperation.

As Chinese lawmakers deliberate on a draft decision on improving the electoral system of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, reporters raised questions on this topic.

In his response, Wang said implementing the principle of "patriots administering Hong Kong" is necessitated by the need to advance the "One Country, Two Systems" cause and maintain long-term stability in Hong Kong.

"It is constitutional, legitimate, just and reasonable," he stressed. 

China's bilateral relations with the new U.S. administration were under the spotlight during the press conference as well.

"As two countries with different social systems, China and the United States naturally have differences and disagreements. What matters most is to manage them effectively through candid communication to prevent strategic miscalculation and avoid conflict and confrontation," Wang said. 

China is ready to work with the United States to return bilateral relations to the right track of healthy and steady growth, he said.
