China calls Korean Peninsula situation an issue 'at our door,' vows to play constructive role

Calling the situation in the Korean Peninsula an issue "at our door," China on Wednesday vowed to keep playing a constructive role.

"We've been consistent and clear on the Korean Peninsula issue," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin when asked to comment on a phone call between two top officials from China and the U.S. on the matter.

Liu Xiaoming, China's special representative on Korean Peninsula affairs, spoke to Sung Kim, U.S. special representative for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), late Tuesday night, with the latter stating Washington's commitment to a diplomatic resolution of the issues.

Kim also said his country hopes to re-start dialogue and contact the DPRK as soon as possible.

Nuclear talks between Washington and Pyongyang have stalled since a summit between former U.S. President Donald Trump and DPRK leader Kim Jong Un broke up in Hanoi in 2019 – a lack of agreement on the timing of sanctions relief and denuclearization were cited as reasons for the failure to strike a deal. The two sides held working-level talks in the years after, but no progress was made.

China has encouraged the two sides to take phased steps towards denuclearization and "meet each other halfway."

"We will continue to play a constructive role, till the Peninsula realizes long-time peace and stability," Wang said.
