Situated in the Wumeng Mountains in southwest China's Yunnan Province, Daguan County is at a high altitude with barren soil and frequent geological disasters. It was one of the poorest counties in the country.
Rainy and cloudy, Daguan is home to an endemic plant species: qiongzhu bamboo. The plantation of bamboo has changed the fate of the locals. Various bamboo products of the Qiongzhu brand sell well on the market, not only helping lift people there out of poverty, but also leading their children on better education out of the mountains.
To date, 31,600 people in the county have shaken off poverty. The mature qiongzhu bamboo forests cover nearly 14,000 hectares.
