North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region's Otog Front Banner is located in the depth of vast deserts. More than 60 percent of the banner is covered by sand. Overgrazing further damaged its ecology. In the 1990s, Inner Mongolia adopted a policy to replace grazing with tree planting to restore the ecology. Local herders who were reluctant at the beginning gradually accepted. With the technological support of the local government, the herders have been able to grow more grass and other crops that are adaptable to the windy and sandy environment. By 2019, more than 33,000 hectares of grassland were restored in the region. Watch this episode to learn more.
