Despite strong opposition from the international community, the Japanese government started releasing nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant on August 24. According to the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the first round of release is complete, and the second round of discharge will begin as early as the end of September.

After learning about Japan's discharge of nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean, several New York residents said the Japanese government should consider the opinions of countries around the Pacific Ocean before making a formal decision to discharge nuclear-contaminated water into the sea. A citizen said that the ocean connects the whole world, which is not only a matter for one country; anything done on the other side of the ocean will have an impact on the whole world.
