Geckos of the genus Goniurosaurus are a type of nocturnal animals that prey on small insects. Their habitats are primarily rocky forests where they can snooze safely in caves during daylight hours. Due to the vivid-colored patterns on their bodies, these creatures are always popular.

There are four gecko species endemic to south China's Hainan Province: the Chinese cave gecko, Zhou's leopard gecko, Goniurosaurus sinensis and Goniurosaurus bawanglingensis. At present, information about each species is still limited. The populations of these four geckos are believed to be small, thus making them fragile.

The central and western mountainous areas of the island have been designated as the core conservation zone of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. Residents living in this area have been required to relocate in order to allow the flora and fauna to thrive. This measure is not only for the protection of the geckos but also for many other types of wildlife.
