Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed his first face-to-face meeting with US President Donald Trump a great success. Following the end of the summit at Mar-a-Lago in Florida on Thursday and Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called it "positive and fruitful."
Washington also stressed the "positive chemistry" between the two leaders.
'Outstanding relationship'
"I had a very successful meeting with President Trump," Xi told Alaska Governor Bill Walker during a stopover in Anchorage on his way back to China on Friday evening local time. "We have reached multiple consensuses and achieved positive results."
The two heads of state held an in-depth exchange of views on major global and regional issues of common concern. They met for more than seven hours, according to China's foreign minister.

The two sides believe the summit was "positive and fruitful," Wang said, stressing that the meeting has set a constructive tone for the development of China-US relations and charted the course of bilateral ties in a new era.
Xi and Trump have increased mutual understanding and established a sound working relationship and personal friendship through the meeting, Wang added.
During the meeting, Xi said a sound bilateral relationship will benefit not only the two countries and peoples, but also the world at large, adding that cooperation is the only right choice for China and the United States.

Trump responded that the US and China bear heavy responsibilities as major countries in the world. The two sides can achieve great accomplishments if they maintain communication and coordination on major issues, he indicated.
According to the US president, the summit has produced much progress in bilateral relations. "We have made tremendous progress in our relationship with China," he told reporters as the two delegations met on Friday. "We will be making additional progress. The relationship developed by President Xi and myself I think is outstanding."
He said "lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away."

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Trump and Xi enjoyed "very frank, very candid" discussions that were "very positive."
"The chemistry between the two leaders was positive," the top US diplomat said. "The posture between the two really set the tone for our subsequent meetings between our high-level delegations."
The rapport was also evident when Xi and Trump took a casual walk around the seaside resort on Friday and when Trump's five-year-old granddaughter Arabella sang a Chinese song and recited Chinese poetry to Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan before dinner on Thursday.

Expanded consensuses
The Chinese president invited Trump to visit China during the meeting. His US counterpart accepted the invitation with pleasure and said he hoped to make the trip at an early date. Wang revealed the state visit will take place before the end of the year.
Moreover, the two sides announced the establishment of four high-level mechanisms for dialogue and cooperation on diplomacy and security, the economy, law enforcement and cyber security, as well as social and people-to-people exchanges. On Friday, senior Chinese and American officials initiated two of them – the comprehensive economic dialogue and the diplomatic and security dialogue.

The US also agreed to strengthen cooperation with China on military affairs and support China's efforts in going after fugitives who have fled abroad and recovering illicit money.
Xi told Trump that China welcomes the US side to participate in the Belt and Road initiative.
Managing differences
During his talks with Trump, Xi said the two sides should properly handle sensitive issues, manage and control differences in a constructive manner, and strengthen communication and coordination on major international and regional affairs.
The two leaders exchanged views on the one-China policy, the Korean Peninsula's nuclear issue and the deployment of the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea. The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to realizing denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and agreed to maintain close communication and coordination on the issue.

Wang said China was willing to work with the US to expand mutually beneficial cooperation and handle sensitive issues on the basis mutual respect.
"It is unrealistic for two major countries to have no disagreement and we may encounter some situations as our interests interact in broader areas," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang said at a press conference before the summit. "But it is good that we have the consensus to pursue win-win cooperation on the basis of non-confrontation, non-conflict and mutual respect. I think things will be easier with this consensus in place."
China-US relations have transitioned smoothly after the change in power in Washington, a commentary by the editorial team of China's Global Times said, stressing that the Xi-Trump summit has instilled new vitality to bilateral ties.
