August 12, 2021 marks the 10th World Elephant Day.

World Elephant Day was launched to bring attention to the difficulty Asian and African elephants face.

Two distinct types of elephants were recognized, the African elephant (Loxodonta) and the Asian elephant (Elephas). The elephants in China are Asian elephants, which is a first-class protected animal in China and listed as endangered by IUCN Red List. In China, it is only distributed in southwest China's Yunnan Province. After years of conservation, the number of wild Asian elephants in China has doubled from 150 to about 300.

Global climate change, increasing human activities, poaching and habitat loss are serious threats to elephants' survival. Elephants are in dire need of attention.

On this day, let's join hands to help elephants, the big friends of mankind.
