Xi Jinping to attend BRICS summit, APEC meeting, G20 summit next week

Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend a series of leaders' meetings in the coming week via video links in Beijing and deliver important speeches, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying announced on Thursday.

President Xi will attend the 12th BRICS summit on November 17 at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the 27th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting on November 20 at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, and the 15th G20 Summit on November 21-22 at the invitation of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said at a regular press briefing on Thursday that the upcoming summits will play "important leading roles" in the global efforts to strengthen cooperation in fighting COVID-19, facilitate economic recovery and improve economic governance. 

BRICS is the acronym for an emerging-market bloc that groups Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The aim of the grouping was clear from its inception: to establish an equitable, democratic and multi-polar world order.

APEC, a regional economic forum established in 1989, has been a huge success in accelerating economic integration in the Asia-Pacific region. By promoting balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative and secured growth, its 21 member economies have been making joint efforts to create greater prosperity for their peoples.

The G20 started out as a 1999 financial policy coordination body attended by finance ministers that then morphed into a leader-level body, attended by its member countries' presidents and prime ministers, after the 2008 financial crisis. The G20 accounts for 85 percent of the global economic output and 75 percent of the world trade volume.

The G20 held an Extraordinary Virtual Leaders' Summit on COVID-19 in March.
