The Ailao and Wuliang Mountain National Nature Reserve in southwest China's Yunnan Province is home to a first-class state-protected animal, the western black-crested gibbon. There are about 500 of them living in Wuliang Mountain.

Xiong Youfu, 43, grew up on Wuliang Mountain. In 2011, he became a monitor observing and recording the behavior of his neighbors. Not only him, a dozen households in his village all join in protecting the local wildlife, including the western black-crested gibbons and the capped langurs.

Since the establishment of the nature reserve, the environment has improved and the gibbon population has also increased, thanks to the villagers' efforts.
