The New Zealand Pigeon, also known as Kererū, is an iconic pigeon endemic to New Zealand. It's a relatively large bird with a green head and white breast. Rock pigeons are around 30 to 35 cm, while a New Zealand pigeon measures about 51 cm long. When it flies, it makes distinctive noisy wingbeats which sound like "whoosh, whoosh."
Since the New Zealand Pigeon is the only remaining native bird that is capable of eating large fruit from the native trees, as a seed disperser, the bird is remarkably important to the survival of many of New Zealand's native plant species.
The bird actually can get drunk after gorging on too much fruit. Sometimes they fall out of trees because they are too drunk.
Here are some photos of this cute creature.
